Watershed Wednesdays Celebrate Verde River Through Music and Poetry

PRESCOTT, Ariz.— The Raven Café on Wednesday will be the scene of an unusual musical chorus as local musicians lend their voices to Prescott’s river refrain: a call for protection of the upper Verde. The event, Watershed Wednesday, will feature an “open mic” format, allowing those who want to show their talent in support of Verde River conservation to share the stage with experienced performers.

Watershed Wednesdays, organized by the Center for Biological Diversity, provide an opportunity to share fun and information about the Verde River. Open mic music night is one of a monthly series of Verde-focused events held at the Raven. The Center is educating local citizens about threats to the Verde River that include groundwater pumping, off-road vehicle damage, pollution from sludge dumping and global warming. Future events include “The Magnetic Poetry Approach to Letting Your Elected Officials Know What You Think” on Nov. 12th during which the audience will get a chance to write letters to political leaders based on the “magnetic poetry” technique. The Dec. 10th Watershed Wednesday will feature an open mic poetry reading for the River featuring both well known and newer local poets.

Tom Agostino, popular singer-songwriter, organizer of the Granite Peak Folk Sessions, and host of “The Folk Sessions, Live!” radio program, will open the evening with music that comes from the heart and touches the spirit. Also, Iona – performers of traditional Irish and Celtic music – will take up their fiddles, flutes, guitars and accordion. Drawing on the talents of Yvonne Holland, Pamela Craig, Jan Alexander, Noela Elliot and Meg Bohrman, Iona’s melodies recall the joys and sorrows inherent in strong connection to a place. Jesse Pursley’s innovative and rhythmic playing on didgeridoo and trombone will round out the evening. Audience members will have a chance to show their appreciation of the performers by donating dollar bills to the Center’s Verde interpretive exhibit fund.

Watershed Wednesday open mic music night will take place 7:30 to 9 p.m. at The Raven Café, 142 N. Cortez St., Prescott. For more information or to be included on the list of performers for Wednesday’s show, call Edie Dillon, at (928) 277-9155.
