Action timeline

May 3, 2005 – The Center joined a coalition of U.S. and Mexican conservation organizations to file a petition with the Commission for Environmental Cooperation, an agency created by the North American Free Trade Agreement, against Chevron's proposed construction of a liquid natural gas terminal near Los Coronados Islands in Baja California, Mexico. These islands, just 11 miles from the U.S. border, provide nesting sites essential to the survival of the Xantus's murrelet.

January 25, 2007 – In response to our complaint, the Commission recommended an investigation be launched into whether Mexico violated its own environmental laws when it authorized Chevron's proposed liquid natural gas facility off the coast of Baja. Soon thereafter, the corporation abandoned its plans to construct the energy terminal.

July 12, 2011 ? The Center reached a landmark agreement with the Fish and Wildlife Service compelling the agency to move forward in the protection process for 757 species, including the Xantus?s murrelet.
