Action timeline

March 8, 1967 – The San Francisco garter snake was listed as a federally endangered species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

1971 – The San Francisco garter snake was listed as a state endangered species under the California Endangered Species Act.

September 11, 1985 – A final recovery plan was published for the garter snake.

October 2, 2006 – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced the publication of a five-year review for the species reaffirming its endangered status.

May 30, 2007 – The Center filed suit against the Environmental Protection Agency for authorizing use of at least 17 harmful pesticides in proximity to San Francisco garter snake habitat.

September 24, 2008 – The Center filed notice of intent to sue the city of San Francisco over harm to San Francisco garter snakes at Sharp Park Golf Course in Pacifica. The Center unveiled a campaign to restore Sharp Park as a coastal wetland habitat for garter snakes and the California red-legged frog.
